A bit about Susan…

  • Susan originally graduated from N. E. Baptist Hospital School of Nursing, Boston, MA in 1973 and earned her Masters in Nursing at the University of Southern Maine in Portland 20 years later.  She practiced the art and science of nursing in a variety of nursing roles including staff nurse, nursing manager, Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist, Staff Development Specialist, and Nursing Director.  After 45 years, Susan retired from full-time clinical practice as the Director of Nursing for the Special Care Units at Maine Medical Center.  Currently, Susan serves as Adjunct Faculty in the School of Nursing at the University of New England, Portland, ME.
  • Nationally recognized for her professional contributions to critical care nursing, Susan has received the The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses; Special Contributor Award presented by Philips Healthcare Corp for contributions to Patient/Family Centered Research; 2009 ‘People’s Choice’ Poster Award presented by the 14th Annual American Telemedicine Association International Conference, Las Vegas, NV; The Cindy Gregory eXellence in Leadership Award Presented by VISICU, Baltimore, MD; and the Cardiovascular Nursing Excellence Award Presented by the American Heart Association, Bethel, ME.
  • A creative and innovative speaker, Susan is well recognized for her use of humor as a teaching strategy and is a popular speaker at international, national, regional, and local conferences on both clinical and leadership topics.  She has published numerous critical care book chapters and peer-review professional journal articles.  She currently sits on the Editorial Board for Critical Care Nurse, a popular critical care nursing journal.  Susan remains active in the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and has previously served on the national Board of Directors.
